The Why

Stephanie Vicente

I want to be a Guru at Shopify because, to my understanding, it seems to be a pretty fast-paced and engaging position. I bet there's never a dull day and I bet that each day is different, ever-changing. I suppose you could say the possibilities in a day mirror the possibilities of the Shopify platform: adaptable, evolving, limitless.

Because I've spent a lot of time creating Herd Magazine, growing it, nurturing it, I understand and can relate to merchants. However, I must be transparent here: While Herd Magazine pays its contributors, designer, editors, I do not pay myself. That's because I've delegated a lot of my role so that the magazine can be a source of income for others, and a labour of love for me. So, while I used to work on Herd for hours on end each day, now I would say I allocate about 10 hours per week to the magazine. It belongs to the people, and that is exactly what I wanted. It remains a creative outlet for me, a place for me to jump in and have fun when I want to.

All of that said, I need steady work that I will enjoy, and I believe I have a lot to offer Shopify given my previous work experience and the content of my character. The fact that I'm so versatile is key to the Guru position. Aside from the steady pay (let's face it in this economic climate it's hard to find), the appeal of being a Guru is ultimately about the chance to talk to so many people in a day. I imagine it to be an incredibly rewarding position: helping merchants solve problems or improve their existing store; taking the time to level with someone and walk them through a solution; bringing relief to someone's otherwise frustrating day.

In the end I suppose that makes me quite selfish since all I really want is to feel good about the work I've done.
